Audi has decided to change the traditional layout of the steering wheel controls in the new Q3 2026, which now features a horizontal bar instead of conventional levers.
This new approach groups the windshield wiper and turn signal controls into a single module, positioned behind the steering wheel. The front wiper control, for example, is on the left side with a rotary knob to adjust speed and an additional button to activate the water jet. The rear wiper and high beams also have their own dedicated buttons on this bar.
The change was made to free up space on the right side of the steering wheel, where the gear selector is now located. As a result, the center console has been reorganized, allowing for the inclusion of two cup holders, USB-C ports covered by a sliding lid, and a 15-watt wireless charger with cooling.
Although the new system may seem unintuitive at first glance, Audi believes that drivers will adapt quickly.
Even though it’s a new feature for the brand, similar systems have already been used by other manufacturers such as Fiat and Mercedes. Audi, however, argues that this modernization is necessary and not just a stylistic change. It’s likely that the new layout will be implemented in other models in the future, as it wouldn’t be viable to apply it to just one vehicle.
Still, the change may raise questions among consumers who are used to the traditional setup.
